What is Mechanical Engineering?
Mechanical Engineering is a broad profession creatively engaged in the design, production and operation of devices, machines and systems which extend our physical abilities. Mechanical engineers are involved in activities such as energy conversion and utilization, machinery design, manufacturing processes, automatic control, bio-mechanics and transportation of all forms.
Mechanical Engineers study the response of materials to forces and energy flows. Using their understanding of these basic processes, mechanical engineers design space vehicles, aircraft, automobiles, robots, medical equipment, prostheses, and the multitude of mechanical devices which we depend on every day but often take for granted.
In Wikipedia.Org it has been described like “Mechanical engineering is the discipline that applies the principles of engineering, physics, and materials science for the design, analysis, manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems. It is the branch of engineering that involves the design, production, and operation of machinery. It is one of the oldest and broadest of the engineering disciplines.”
The Mechanical Engineering field requires an understanding of core areas including mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics, materials science, structural analysis, and electricity. Mechanical engineers use these core principles along with tools like computer-aided design, and product life-cycle management to design and analyze manufacturing plants, industrial equipment and machinery, heating and cooling systems, transport systems, aircraft, watercraft, robotics, medical devices, weapons, and others.
Mechanical Engineering Department in BMS College
The Mechanical Engineering Department in BMS College Bangalore was started when the institute was established in 1946. Mechanical Engineering is one of those three basic engineering branches which are started with BMS College of Engineering. The Department was started with an intake capacity of 60 students in undergraduate level, which enhanced with 100 seats in 2001, and 120 seats in 2006 and lastly 180 seats in 2014.
The Department also started Post Graduate Program in Machine Design in the year 1986 with an intake of 18 students, and another Post Graduate Program in Manufacturing Science and Engineering which was started in 2014. The department is also recognized as Research Centre by VTU Belgaum.
A research has been granted to the tune of 700 Lakhs is funded to the department by various agencies like DST, AICTE, DRDO, AR&DB etc. The department has good number of MOUs with various sectors of industry ranging from automotive to manufacturing domains. Various societies like SAE, FPSI, and ASHRAE etc. have their student chapters in the campus bridging the gap between industry and academia. Industrial training, bridge courses are conducted periodically in the department for industries such as Scania Commercial vehicles India Pvt. Ltd, FPSI etc. Department of Mechanical Engineering is accredited by NBA for 5 years on the basis of Washington accord.

Career Options after Mechanical Engineering
Mechanical Engineers are required in all manufacturing facilities. The working criteria of a mechanical engineer changes according to the type and domain of the company they are working with and the area of specialization. In a broader sense it can be defined that mechanical engineer works on design and control of a system that goes into the process of manufacturing the machinery and product. They tests new systems for feasibility and efficiency and carry out quality management and improvement process.
There is fabulous scope for mechanical engineers in automobile engineering, cement industry, steel, power sector, hydraulics, manufacturing plants, drilling and mining industry, petroleum, aeronautical, biotechnology and many more. Nowadays they are also increasingly needed in the environmental and bio-medical fields.
A beginner in Mechanical Engineering can opt for various job openings such as: Maintenance Engineer, safety Engineer, Quality Assurance, CNC Programmer, Jr. Engineer, Design Engineer, CAD/CAM Trainer, Production Supervisor/Engineer, R&D Trainee etc.
